Ivanhoe Cambridge plans to leverage its extensive expertise to penetrate the shopping centre industry in China and India.
Tapping into emerging markets
In China, Ivanhoe Cambridge’s goal is to put its experience in shopping centre management to work for the benefit of local owners. It has established a real estate services company in Shanghai to provide management and development services to shopping centre owners, managers and investors. This team manages La Nova (“Le He Cheng”) shopping centre, located in Changsha, the capital of Hunan, of which Ivanhoe Cambridge owns 60%.
The Shanghai office is also overseeing the construction of the Wuxi Parktown residential complex of which Ivanhoe Cambridge owns 50%, in Wuxi, Jiangsu. In 2009, Ivanhoe Cambridge signed an agreement to develop a new shopping centre in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan, in partnership with Beijing Wangfujing Department Store Group.
In India, a business development office was set up in New Delhi to explore this fast-growing market.
Elsewhere in the Asia-Pacific region, the Company’s strategies focus primarily on acquiring interests in shopping centres or development projects in partnership with local developers and managers.
