North America

Beyond its direct ownership activities in Canada, Ivanhoe Cambridge has also been an active investor in the North American real estate market, where it co-owns properties and development projects with prominent real estate firms and investors.

Investing in the world’s largest retail market

In Canada, although Ivanhoe Cambridge focuses its activities on the direct ownership of shopping centres, it also holds an interest in select properties that are managed by renowned partners.

Ivanhoe Cambridge made its first strategic move in the U.S. market in 1995. It acquired a number of shopping centres with local partners, capitalizing on favourable real estate cycles that promised an increase in value. These centres then underwent a vast redevelopment program in order to maximize their value-generating potential.

Starting in 2003, the Company began to sell the majority of its interests in these properties in order to take advantage of substantial increases in property values since the acquisitions were made.

Despite the sales carried out since 2003, Ivanhoe Cambridge continues to have a presence in the United States and will invest further in this market as opportunities arise.
